During the pursuit of an AWOL sailor, a fight ensues and one of two shore patrolmen is shot. But McGarrett and the Five-O team run into Navy resistance when they try to bring the suspect in under civil law to protect him.

A veteran of Vietnam has grave psychological problems which compel him to become a kidnapper. McGarrett is called into the kidnapping cases, and discovers that the young veteran is being driven into a catatonic state deliberately.

A dishonest poker game causes a young honeymooner to lose his life. McGarrett's investigation is complicated when the victim's brother, dissatisfied with the progress on the case, sets out to track down the assailant and almost becomes a criminal himself.
