Emily's vivid imagination introduces her to the spirit of her mother as a child.

Falling Angels,

Oliver, Emily's cousin, announces that New Moon actually belongs to his father. Maida, one of the girls working nearby, calls him mean and prances off with Emily and Ilse.

The Tale of Duncan McHugh,

A young boy named Duncan blames himself for his mother's poverty and depression.

Miss Brownell plans to leave her post as Blair Water's teacher to marry the school inspector.

The Ghost of Wyther Grange,

Ilse Burnley wants to learn about her dead mother, but her father adamantly refuses to discuss it.
