At about the time of the Revolution, many priceless works of art and furniture were looted and sold. One of the key roles of the Director-General of Versailles is to continue the process of restoring these works to their rightful place back in the palace.

The programme follows the specialist guides who bring Versailles to life for the thousands of people who visit. Fabrice has long dreamed of becoming a guide at Versailles. Will he make the grade to become a privileged key holder to the palace doors?

During the summer months, the gardens of Versailles come alive to the sound of seventeenth-century music and the play of the fountains. Gabriel Novello and his team spend weeks preparing and fine-tuning the fountains for the spectacle.

Louis XIV built Versailles as a showcase, and on no occasion does it live up to his intention more than during the Fêtes de Nuit. Every year, over five dates in July and August, members of the public flock for the firework display, music and light show.

This episode explores the ingenious ideas to generate revenue at the palace, from taking advantage of the popularity of Versailles across the Atlantic, to recreating Marie-Antoinette’s personal perfume.
