Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) are investigating vandalism at a railroad yard when Lacey is suddenly abducted by a dangerous young man (guest star Michael Madsen) escalating to a face-off between him and the SWAT Team.

Insubordination,

Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) find themselves investigating a cocaine dealing case that suddenly becomes much more complicated when their commanding officer turns out to be Dory McKenna (guest star Barry Primus).

Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) are on the protection duty of a recently paroled cop killer while he awaits a new identity and is moved away. After he is murdered while under their protection, Cagney and Lacey work to find the murderer.

Fathers & Daughters,

When a man's suicide turns out to be a murder, Cagney and Lacey must figure out who the true murderer is after the man's wife and daughter both confess to the crime. The investigation only becomes more complicated when they discover more.

Taxi Cab Murders,

When a string of violent murders takes place, Cagney and Lacey go undercover as Taxi Cab drivers to try and find the killer. Lacey's family becomes hysterical at the prospect, fearing that Lacey will lose her life in pursuit of justice.

Unusual Occurrence,

When a young boy refuses to comply with her commands and Cagney (Sharon Gless) is forced to shoot him, her life becomes a nightmare. Cagney must deal with having shot a young boy, while the press claims it to be racially motivated.

Thank God It's Monday,

Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) spend the weekend on duty going through old paperwork when they discover a warrant for a rape case that expires in 24 hours. The two must race to serve the warrant before it expires.

During a drug raid, Cagney and Lacey arrest the man responsible for Dory McKenna's (guest star Barry Primus) drug rehabilitation on charges of narcotics possession. When the evidence disappears, Dory becomes the prime suspect.

Lacey stops a woman's attempted suicide but feels guilt and responsibility when the woman turns up murdered soon after. When Cagney and Lacey investigate the murder, they soon discover a world of massive gambling debts and loan sharks.

Out Of Control,

Cagney & Lacey investigate a homicide that occurred during an attempted burglary. They discover that the gun used was purchased illegally. In light of this information, Lacey also discovers that her son, Michael, has been playing with her revolver.

American Dream,

Cagney and Lacey investigate a series of fire-bombings in the garment district, and the trucking company that they suspect is behind them. Meanwhile, Harvey Lacey switches occupations and becomes a tax-shelter salesman.

Happily Ever After,

Cagney and Lacey investigate a larceny case after a stray bullet offers a new development in 32,000 petty theft cases. A singular credit department employee appears to be behind it all. Meanwhile, Dory McKenna proposes to Cagney.

Rules Of The Game,

Cagney is requested by Capt. Hennessey to partner with him in the investigation of the murder of a foreign diplomat while Lacey is on desk duty. Everything becomes complicated when Cagney becomes a victim of sexual harassment by Capt. Hennessey.

Cagney witnesses a stabbing and apprehends a vicious criminal. But when the victim is found murdered, she becomes the only witness to hold the killer responsible. The killer, who has a history of making people disappear, begins to stalk Cagney.

Who Said It's Fair? (Part 1),

Cagney and Lacey search for a young boy whose mother fears is missing. The detectives, however, suspect the child is working as a runner for a drug dealer. Lacey is reluctant to go to the doctor after she fears she might have breast cancer.

Who Said It's Fair? (Part 2),

After finally visiting the doctors, Lacey receives the news that she must have a mastectomy, forcing her to face her own mortality and what that could mean for her family. Meanwhile, members of the 14th precinct are preparing for the Sergeant's exam.

Lost And Found,

While Lacey recovers from her surgery, she realizes that there may be more to life and wonders if she should retire from the police force. Meanwhile, Cagney is upset when her yellow Corvette is stolen with a piece of graffiti as the clue.

Cagney (Sharon Gless) and Lacey (Tyne Daly) go up against master jewel thief Albert Grand (guest star Ferdinand Mayne) once again when he suddenly resurfaces. Cagney is determined not to let him slip through her fingers this time.

Cagney's character and professionalism comes under attack as her sexual harassment charges against Capt. Hennessey go to trial. She decides to stand on her own feet as she ignores advice and threats. Meanwhile, Lacey investigates a fraud case.

Cagney and Lacey are tasked with investigating the disappearance of a high-school kid. They uncover that he was accidentally sent to a violent prison for shoplifting. While there, he was attacked and raped, resulting in a lawsuit from his parents.

Organized Crime,

When Cagney and Lacey investigate the brutal murder of a nun, they discover that the nun was the goddaughter of a local mobster. The mobster offers to conduct the investigation within his organization. Meanwhile, Cagney gets promoted to Sergeant.
