Kersey leads a high-stakes investigation into a violent murder committed by a generally non-violent thief, who claims he was hired to frighten the victim.

A blackmailer poisons seven random jars of baby food at a supermarket and publicly demands a ransom, putting Wycliffe in a race against time to discover if this is an act of terrorism or a vendetta.

Wycliffe deals with an embittered Kersey while attempting to solve the murder of a famous yachtswoman's psychiatrist.

Superintendent Le Page (Sharon Duce) returns with her report on Kersey's case, while Wycliffe and Lane work a strange manslaughter case in which the murderer claims she thought her victim was a ghost.
