On his eighteenth birthday orphaned Afghani refugee Mati gets a letter to say he is to be deported after eleven years in Britain with his foster mother Rosie and her Down Syndrome son George so he runs away to live in the woods.

Divorced from Debra following his adultery Liam lives with Anna but still sees his two little boys, though 15 year old daughter Jess blanks him.

20 year old Nathan is thrilled to start work at the local car factory but, despite excellent wages, he is employed on a non-union zero hours basis and the job is dull and demanding with the harsh foreman Roy requiring him to come in on a moment's notice.

Hospital nurse Kim moves into her late mother's house, helped by daughter Grace and boyfriend Si. The house is woefully in need of repair and so she brings in builder Kenny Jones.
