General Holland M Smith introduces the story of the attacks on Rabaul, the Solomon Islands and Midway.

The US assault on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands, 1943, and Tarawa.

The US Marines attack the Marianas to get a bombing base within reach of Japan, the assault on Pelelieu.

The US Marines continuing assault on Pelelieu, its capture and then onwards to Iwo Jima.

The Marines move on to Okinawa, with periods of rest and recuperation between fighting.
